Donald joined Newgate in 2015 as part of its acquisition of PPS Group and has over twenty years of experience working in communications at the highest level. He has handled several major strategic communications issues, including the Edinburgh Trams dispute. Donald also leads on supporting Sainsbury’s on a range of strategic property and communications issues across the country.
Donald spent seven years as Leader of Edinburgh City Council and was one of Scotland’s most high profile politicians. In that role, Donald successfully tackled a wide range of political, development and communications issues that affected Scotland’s Capital, including when Scotland hosted the G8 summit and Make Poverty History march, for which the city won the CIPR ‘Grand Prix’ Communication Award.
Donald began his career as a medical scientist and so has a sound understanding of technical and scientific issues. This, coupled with his political background gives him an insight into how to translate complex technical information ‘into English’ and he has managed debates as varied as the introduction of mobile phone masts, adjudications on Trams and the safety issues around an Energy from Waste plant in the centre of Glasgow.

The thing I love about this job is the sheer scale of the investment in Scotland that we work on – its running at about £3bn over the last three years and that means many thousands of jobs.
